Apple and Samsung, 'frenemies' for life

Apple.jpg
San Francisco/Seoul: It was the late Steve Jobs' worst nightmare.
A powerful Asian manufacturer, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, uses Google Inc's Android software to create smartphones and tablets that closely resemble the iPhone and the iPad. Samsung starts gaining market share, hurting Apple Inc's margins and stock price and threatening its reign as the king of cool in consumer electronics.

What 7 Million Jailbreaks Are Saying. Is Apple Listening?

What is going on here? The normally docile Apple masses are growing restless. The much anticipated iOS 6 jailbreak, evasi0n, has now been installed more than 7 million times in the six days since its release. (Forbes‘ Andy Greenberg pegged it at ”nearly 7 million” as of 8 am Friday. At that rate, it could be well over 10 million by now, but there has been no reliable report on installs since Greenberg’s.)
This is an impressive number, but it is important to remembe

New smartphone app PressureNet could help forecast storms

New smartphone app PressureNet could help forecast storms
NEW YORK: Researchers have developed a new appthat lets users send pressure measurements to scientists which may help predict storms.

The app, called PressureNet, takes advantage of the latest sensor to show up in smart devices.

Some of the latest mobile devices now takeatmospheric pressure measurements to determine elevation, in an effort to more precisely track location, the 'TechNewsDaily' reported.

At the same time, the pressure in an area can inform meteorologists about what's happening with the air masses in that location and help them forecast stormsthat will arrive over the next few hours.

Atmospheric scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle are trying to develop a way to use these device-gathered measurements for short-term storm forecasts.

It will take some time for research before the scientists are able to test whether their method works. If it does, smartphone and tablet owners could help collect far more data than are now available from federally managed weather stations in the US.

"We could potentially have tens or hundreds of thousands of additional surface pressure observations, which could significantly improve short-term weather forecasts," Cliff Mass, who is leading the weather-predictingeffort, said in a statement.

The UW team is now gathering about 4,000 data points an hour, the report said.

Previous versions of the app have been around since 2011, but its developers at the Canada-based Cumulonimbus just updated it in January so that users may share their data anonymously with Mass and colleagues.

"Thunderstorms are one of the areas of weakest skill for forecasting. I think thunderstorms in the middle part of the country could potentially be the biggest positive for this approach," he said.

Researchers hope to compare their smartphone- and tablet-aided forecasts to traditional predictions.

You Won’t See Facebook’s Graph Search On iPhone Or Android Anytime Soon

Graph Search
The release of Facebook’s Graph Search has raised much discussion among technology pundits and investors. One of the biggest questions surrounding the highly anticipated feature is its availability on mobile.
After all, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said on a number of occasions that Facebook is a mobile company. “On mobile we are going to make a lot more money than on desktop,” he said at TechCruch Disrupt SF 2012, adding “a lot more people have phones than computers, and mobile users are more likely to be daily active users.” Facebook understands mobile’s importance, so why wouldn’t it offer Graph Search for Android and iPhone from the start?
It’s simple: Graph Search for mobile would need to incorporate speech, which is a different beast altogether.

Sony's PS4 to focus on new style of play, but what about hardware?

I am always somewhat suspicious of a new console that hits the market amidst talk of how hardware and raw horsepower isn't the true focus of the system.
Unfortunately, this may be the case with the Sony's long-awaited PlayStation 4, which is expected to make its debut on February 20 and launch later this year.
Indeed, an unnamed Sony Computer Entertainment executive has reportedly stated that the PlayStation 4 will be more of a home entertainment hub than we've seen with previous Xbox consoles.

Fujitsu speeds up internet transmissions, declares war on buffering

Fujitsu's engineers, bored of waiting for their movies to download, have cooked up a new data transferprotocol that promises to be 30 times faster than current speeds. Using a proprietary tweak of user datagram protocol (UDP), the software examines the available bandwidth and only uses the optimal amount, rather than trying to load the pipe with more than it can handle. The science, however, lies in its ability to distinguish between packets that haven't arrived and those which are lost -- and only resending the latter. It's hoping to commercialize the software at some point this year, so if your Skype chats suddenly get a lot lesslaggy, you know who to blame.

HMV Announces UK Redundancies

Deloitte has announced redundancies at music retailer HMV.
It's been a rough couple of weeks for HMV. A couple of weeks back, the music retailer and entertainment company announced that it hadofficially entered administration. Though little information on the company's future was offered, HMV did say that it had appointed Deloitte as an administrator and Deloitte said it would be keeping stores open while it assesses HMV's situation and seeks a buyer. Unfortunately, though stores remain open, staff aren't safe from redundancies.
